Galatians chapter 3 starts with Paul calling the Galatians fools....why?
As we discussed yesterday, the Galatians, even after receiving the Gospel, have fallen into works righteousness. Paul points out this silliness in a sarcastic fashion in verse 3:
Galatians 3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?
The Galatians at least knew that to be saved, one had to be perfect. Which is another way of saying, they needed to be justified. However, they were deceived from the simplicity of The Gospel, which is clear: the only way to be justified is by faith:
Galatians 3:11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."
This is the very verse that rocked the world of Martin Luther. The catholic church was putting forth its false doctrine of indulgences and works righteousness, but Martin Luther, thirsting for righteousness, had his eyes unveiled through this verse. This verse echoed in his head (I believe he literally heard a voice); “the just shall live by faith”. Just as God promises:
Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Martin Luther was filled all right! He began to preach The Truth and they were going to burn him at the stake. Religions don't like people preaching The Truth.
Faith is the key...FAITH! What does faith get us?:
By faith; we receive The Spirit;Galatians 3:2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?—
By faith is the working of miracles;Galatians 3:5 Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
By faith we are made righteous;Galatians 3:6 just as Abraham "BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS ACCOUNTED TO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS."
The function of the law is to leave us helpless. The function of the law is to lead us to Christ. In the mirror of the law we know we can not be justified; because we fail miserably in meeting the righteous requirements of God's Holy and Perfect Law. However, we have a Mediator in Christ Jesus:
Galatians 3:24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
If we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior by faith, we become the seed of Abraham, and as the seed of Abraham, we are heirs to the promise!
Galatians 3:29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
